Frito Feet: Why Does My Dog’s Feet Smell Like Corn Chips?
Let’s be honest, do any dog’s feet really smell like potpourri and sunshine?
We would say no.
But, if your pet’s feet smell like a favorite snack food, you may wonder if you’re imagining things. The answer again, however, is no. Pet paws can and do smell like Fritos and there are a few reasons behind the smell.
The Pet Experts at Springbrook Animal Care Center are here to relay some information on why your dog’s feet smell like corn chips. And thankfully, it’s not as bad as you might think.
The Corn Chip Connection
Although the scent of corn chips coming from your pet’s paws can be disconcerting, it is a common condition. In a healthy pet, the feet can smell this way because of a specific bacteria called Proteus or Pseudomonas. These healthy bacteria create a smell that is yeasty in scent.
Your pet also licks the feet to clean them, leaving additional bacteria and microbes that mix with the Proteus or Pseudomonas. This process can increase gross smells because not only because of bacteria, but your pet sweats from the paws.
Oh, and let’s not forget all of the things your dog traipses through outdoors. Hmm… of course your dog’s feet smell!
When the Smell Turns Sour
There are times when the odor is ominous. This is when the feet smell foul, which is typically caused by an underlying health condition. Causes of bad odor from the feet include:
- A cut or injury that isn’t healing that causes infection, pus, etc.
- Bacterial or yeast overgrowth
- Toenail infection
- Skin tumour
- Dryness and scaling of skin
